Château on Fire

Avery Dennison

Europe, Spain

Château on Fire is one of five designs featured in the Avery Dennison Neoclassical inspiration envelope. It was designed by Calcco and created in collaboration with Grupo Argraf, Kurz, and Hinderer-muehlich.

“Sometimes a paper speaks for itself. Body, volume, presence and texture...all of the attributes that transform both design and production,” says a Calcco representative. “This paper is so much more than a background, offering a foundation for your creative vision.”

Our M_usings
This label subverts the traditional visual cues associated with wine label design, to dramatic effect. The classical typography mixes a loosely spaced uppercase sans serif with uppercase serifs and an elegant script – all center aligned and rendered in a restrained red and black. A typical illustration of the vineyard chateau appears in charcoal black framed by an expanse of negative space.

But in this iteration the stately chateau is on fire. Plumes of smoke billow into the sky as flames burst from upper floor windows. The blaze has been masterfully emphasised using three-dimensional embossing, and an overprinted hot foil. A striking reworking of the conventional chateau label.
