Linen has been part of our history for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt, where it was highly valued for its durability. Produced from the fibers of the flax plant, it became a symbol of purity, used for everything from pharaohs’ garments to the wrappings of mummies. And over time, its reputation only grew, becoming a staple of European production, particularly in France and Belgium, where flax fields still thrive today. Indeed, linen remains one of the most sustainable and versatile natural fibers in the world.

That same appreciation for linen’s qualities is what led to the creation of Fasson® Lin Fiber FSC®, our new flax-based label material designed to offer brands a premium option with a natural, tactile feel. Developed using crops grown in France and Belgium, this material mimics the texture of linen to provide a sustainable alternative to packaging. And to demonstrate its potential, we partnered with Sylvie Janot from Dame Studio to create a prototype – one that doesn’t just present the material but tells a story of thoughtful design.

The label of our prototype is an extension of the qualities that make the material so timeless. Its gently torn edge and delicate embossing of linen flowers create an organic feel. A subtle gold foil accent adds a contrast, catching the light in a way that draws attention without overpowering the label itself. Printed by Labelys Group using specialized techniques to highlight both the texture and details of the design, the result is packaging that feels as good as it looks. “This choice of material represents dedication to sustainable practices while providing a unique visual and tactile experience,” explains Sylvie.

Beyond the label, every element of the packaging was chosen to complement the material’s character. A recycled glass bottle by Estal was picked to align with the sustainability values behind the project, while a carbon cork closure provides a naturally inspired finishing touch. A simple linen twine wraps around the neck of the bottle, reinforcing the connection to the material’s origins.

To bring the concept to life in a way that fully immerses people in the story of flax fiber, a dedicated display created by OC Regroupement was designed to showcase not just the packaging but the raw materials themselves. Dried linen flowers and flax fibers are presented in small boxes, giving a hands-on experience of the plant’s journey from field to label. A fabric backdrop, printed with a soft botanical illustration, adds detail to the presentation.

“The objective of this packaging is to deliver a message of responsibility and subtle luxury,” Sylvie reflects. “It is a perfect marriage between tradition and innovation, and each element is designed to inspire trust and admiration.”

The entire project was captured beautifully by photographer Aline Princet, whose images highlight the subtle textures and details that make this prototype stand out.

Ultimately, the creation of Fasson® Lin Fiber FSC® is part of a broader effort to rethink what packaging can be – offering solutions that aren’t just recyclable but also help improve the consumer experience. And with the introduction of this new label material, the possibility for brands to embrace both sustainability and luxury in their packaging has never been more tangible.
