Sake is one of five designs featured in the Avery Dennison “Engage Your Senses” envelope. Created by award-winning design agency Studio Eduardo Aires, the design utilizes the hammered finish of the material as a canvas for tradition.

Studio Eduardo Aires comments on the Sake design:

“Epitomizing the quiet, spiritual landscapes of Japan, where the soft colors of the land are spotted with shiny tones of flowers. These contrasts—captured in the label with graphic elements—are seen in many Japanese paintings and illustrations.”

This showcase calls to mind Jun'ichirō Tanizaki’s essay “In Praise of Shadows,” which serves as an introduction to the concept of “Wabi Sabi.” Wabi Sabi is a worldview based on the acceptance of transience and imperfection, represented through asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, modesty, intimacy and an appreciation of the integrity of natural objects and processes.

Some of these values are evident in Studio Eduardo Aires’s design. Sake adopts a distinctive but unembellished bottle shape, which is complemented with an understated rectangular label.

From the centrally-positioned, rounded, sans serif typeface, a cloud of lines radiate out. This could suggest many things—the passage of time or the fluctuation of environmental changes. Studio Eduardo Aires has exploited the flexibility of Fasson Cloud White by embossing these emanating lines to give them greater tactility and impact.
