This is part of a series of hypothetical brands that explore sustainable products and EcoDesign in the beauty industry.

The reflective properties of mica minerals are used to give many cosmetics their sparkling glow. However, mica mining is often unregulated and has been found to exploit children for labor. As these practices come to light, brands are switching to ethical mica sources to ensure their product’s shine doesn’t come at the cost of others.

Halo Sunscreen advocates for ethical, sustainable mining practices. Responsibly sourced mica makes the sunscreen shine while it’s protecting your skin, and part of the proceeds go towards raising awareness to protect miners and the environment.

The label design radiates positivity, with cross hatched layers of gold and green bringing to mind rays of sun beaming over the earth.

The central motif of an abstracted sun, a universal symbol of optimism, highlights both the primary function of the product and the brand’s effort to shine a light on industry practices.

The brand’s focus on responsible mining carries over in its choice of packaging. The product’s label material is made from 80% calcium carbonate derived from marble mining waste and is applied to glass to improve recyclability. MarbleBase is a unique take on the growing trend of packaging that uses bio-based and waste materials to conserve finite resources like oil.
